Dinner Volunteers--Overview
- know how many meals are needed, add 3--4 adult meals to the guest total
- arrive by 6pm
- bring dinner already prepared
- serve dinner at 6:30pm
- tableware is available
- donations of paper napkins and paper towels are appreciated
- condiments are not usually needed, call ahead
- leftovers go home with you
Overnight Host Duties Each Evening
- arrive by 6:30pm
- bring bed linens or sleeping bag for yourself, bath towel if you plan to shower
- get security procedures from the Lead Volunteer
- help guest feel "at home"...play games, watch movies
- please observe the 10pm bedtime (11pm on weekends)
Overnight Host Duties Each Morning
- awaken guests 5:45am, 7am Saturday & Sunday
- set up for breakfast by 6am, 7am Saturday & Sunday
- clean up, load and start dishwasher before leaving
- help guests leave and sign out according to schedule: 7:30 on weekdays, 9:30 Saturdays, 8:30 Sundays
- turn off the lights and return keys to key box
- Note the extended time on Saturday mornings; this is to allow the moms in the shelter to attend the 9:30 a.m. computer class without having to leave the shelter and come back.)
Before Leaving Hagar's House
- note on the nightly record sheet any challenges you encountered
- Leave a message on the shelter's voicemail (instructions posted in the
Volunteer Room) with this information:
- Number of shelter guests (# moms, # kids), and whether the majority of kids are older or younger (this helps the dinner volunteers immensely).
- The amount of milk and juice in the refrigerator.
- Any needs that you know of (this should also be written on the Nightly Record Sheet).
