Other Programs

The Expanding Horizons Technology Center

provides computer access and training for children and adults participating in one of DCM’s other programs. Volunteer instructors at the center offer training to adults on Thursday evenings and Saturday mornings, while volunteer mentors work with children from Hagar's House Monday through Wednesday evenings. In fact, visiting Expanding Horizons is often a favorite activity of children living at Hagar's House. The center has a wide variety of children’s software as well as software and learning modules for adults.

The Destiny Workshops

are a support group for women living in Family Transitional Housing. The workshops consist of 10 to 14 sessions led by a trained facilitator. Destiny, as the program is commonly called, offers participants a safe and structured setting in which to share personal stories, identify times in their past when needs for unconditional love and trust were not met, and begin to set goals for the future. They also incorporate art, journaling and other creative activities. Because they have proven to be a vitally important part of the program, the Destiny Workshops are mandatory for all women in Family Transitional Housing.

Contextual and Experiential Education for University Students

Contextual Education is a mandatory component of coursework at the Candler School of Theology at Emory University. Each year, Decatur Cooperative Ministry serves as a contextual education site for first-year seminary students. Students work in various DCM programs, reflect theologically on their experiences, and share their thoughts and feedback with other students

DCM serves as a host site for an Experiential Learning program for religion students from Agnes Scott College. Students in selected classes can elect to participate in this program by volunteering for 30 hours per semester at DCM. In addition to their volunteer work, they must also read assigned texts and write journal entries and reflection papers on their experience.
