Project Take Charge
Project Take Charge is a homelessness prevention program that provides emergency assistance with rent, mortgage, utilities, and food. The project serves DeKalb County residents that are in imminent danger of eviction, foreclosure, or disconnection of utility service. It also provides food to individuals and families in need. Project Take Charge is unique in that it strives not only to address the immediate crisis situation but also to provide the knowledge and skills needed to help residents achieve long-term financial stability.
In order to receive assistance, applicants must meet the following minimum criteria:
- Applicants must be residents of DeKalb County, Georgia.
- They must have a regular and verifiable source of income that normally meets their monthly expenses.
- They must have a documentable financial emergency that prevents them from making current rent, mortgage or utility payments.
As a precursor to receiving financial assistance, adults must complete a three-part financial management education class. The class has a roundtable discussion format, and it provides information on topics from developing and analyzing a personal budget to dealing with excessive debt. The final class is a one-on-one personal budgeting session with a volunteer budgeting counselor. During this session, class participants can lay out realistic goals for their future as well as the steps to achieve them.
